They are all made in a family run factory in Portugal. We have visited the factories ourselves and Pedro and his team explained that cork is made from the bark of the Cork Oak Tree. The cork tree takes around 12 years to mature after which it is possible and actually preferable to harvest the bark from the tree which will regenerate every 9 years. A well looked after cork tree will live for up to 200 years!
There are approximately 748 000 hectares of cork forests in Portugal which assist in the absorption of CO2 a greenhouse gas that causes climate change in fact these trees offset 10 million tonnes of carbon every year!
This bark is then collected and sent to his factory where it is broken down in to cork chips and compressed into our yoga blocks. His factory have a zero waste policy so every scrap of left over cork is used in the manufacturing of something else.
